Arambol Carnival
Arambol Carnival takes place every year around the time of the Goa Carnival on the Arambol Beach, Goa, India. This infamous hippie carnival attracts thousands of people, hippies and tourists alike. It was started by Zouzou, an American who wanted to give the Arambol community and tourists a unique adventure. It is loosely based on the Catholic festival that begins three days before Lent, also a celebration of the arrival of spring. Since Goa was a Portuguese colony, many Goans are Catholics and observe Catholic festivals such as the Carnival. However, Arambol Carnival is in a class of its own. It is basically anything goes. The costumes are wild and extremely creative. Many Arambol artists and musicians participate in creating art installations and performances. It is a beach party like no other, full of wild, free and vibrant energy.
I was drawn to this event while living in Goa. It was something that shouldn’t be missed. I mingled with some of the most creative and open-minded people. Hippies built a thriving community within Goa and Arambol Carnival is their contribution to the local culture. It is a place where you learn to let loose and be free. It was a pure joy photographing the happy revelers. Everyone was in a good mood. I would definitely go back.
